In Funeral Service Counseling, we will explore many theories that attempt to explain the psychology behind grief following a loss. These include, but are not limited to:
• Lindemann’s Grief Syndrome
• Bowlby’s Attachment Theory
• Kubler-Ross’s Five Stages of Death and Dying
• Worden’s Tasks of Mourning
• Freud’s Mourning and Melancholia
• Stroebe & Schut’s Dual Process Model
In addition to these theories, we also study what can be expected when someone is going through typical grief, as well as the signs that someone may be having an atypical grief reaction.
Tapping into our own experience when we have lost someone or something can increase our empathy and sympathy as funeral directors. In the spirit of this, please write an essay describing a loss you have experienced in your life and the shape that your grieving process took. Use theories and concepts from class to help you explain what you were feeling. Include insight into why you believe you were reacting the way you did when you were grieving. Conclude your paper with an update as to how you are doing now, and where you are at in the grieving process currently.
